A 2nd generation firefighter, Matt started in the small village of Hightstown NJ as a Junior fireman in March of 1994.
After obtaining his county FF1 cert, he realized this was indeed what he wanted to do for the rest of his life so in the fall of 1997 he packed his bags and moved out to Avon Colorado becoming a student resident FF. The program was very unique as the "student" was required to work 1-24hr shift per week and live at the fire house while attending Colorado Mountain College(CMC).
During his time in CO the department went through a large change and became Eagle River Fire Protection District. Matt worked for the newly formed district before departing in March of 2001 to follow his dream of becoming a FDNY firefighter. In August of 2001 Matthew was sworn in to the FDNY as an EMT and assigned to EMS station 57 in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of BK. While waiting for the promotion to firefighter, Matt began working as a per diem FF for the Robbinsville FD in Mercer County NJ.
On Sept 14th of 2003 Matthew took the oath to become a NY City Firefighter and was assigned to E221 in the Williamsburg section of BK.After a few years the decision was made to transfer to E46 in The Bronx crossing the floor a few years later to L27. The house, effectively known as the
Cross Bronx Express is located in the Bathgate section in the middle of the borough.
Matthew holds an AAS in fire science along with numerous certifications. He has had the honor to instruct around the country at events including Wichita HOT, Joey D in Texas and LI and FDIC
BDTW was started as a way for me to stay into the job at a point in my career when I needed it most. The intention was to pass along what we encounter in the hopes that is would make the fire service better. The best way to know something is to teach it so in doing so it helped sharpen my skills.
